Mauritius' main island, from which the country derives its name, is of volcanic origin and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs. It was the home of the dodo, a large flightless bird related to pigeons, driven to extinction by the end of the 17th century through a combination of hunting and the introduction of predatory species. All in all, the island is a great place to contemplate the impermanence of life. Where on the island would you most like to do that?

What is the best beach in the Caribbean? It's a tough question to settle out. How do you determine which characteristics make it on your list of important characteristics? Sand quality? Heat level? It's a bit of a puzzler when you come right down to it, because beaches are fractal. Every beach is the ideal beach, in one way or another. Which of these great beaches do you like the best?

Los Colibris (The Hummingbirds) is in one of the most beautiful spots in Todos Santos, Colonia La Poza. It has amazing views of the Pacific ocean, a freshwater estuary and a palm grove oasis to the front, and the Sierra de la Laguna mountains to the side and back. The lodge is just a 10-minute walk to 70 miles of pristine beach, and a 5-minute drive to the restaurants, artists' galleries and shops of Todos Santos. How would you rate this wonderful hotel?

Bauer Il Palazzo is a luxury hotel in Venice that dates back to the 18th-century. Located directly on the Grand Canal, it is something of an institution in the city, mixing antiquated interiors and fine artworks with all modern conveniences and impeccable staff. Campeche is a wonderful city; within its walls lie sleepy cobbled streets lined with the brightly colored houses that are so typical of Mexico. Tourism hasn't yet stamped its mark on the city and it's a great place to explore and sample some of the real Mexico that gringos don't usually get to see. Down by the water's edge the fishermen still take their boats out at dawn and return with the day's catch, while in the main square locals gather to meet and exchange all the latest gossip. How would you rate this wonderful hotel?

The Cayman Islands were colonized from Jamaica by the British during the 18th and 19th centuries and were administered by Jamaica after 1863. In 1959, the islands became a territory within the Federation of the West Indies. When the Federation dissolved in 1962, the Cayman Islands chose to remain a British dependency. These days, they're a beautiful place to visit. What attraction draws you there most?

Josette & Gérard Guerlais and their team welcome you to Le Choiseul. On the outskirts of the town of Amboise, Le Choiseul is composed of three residences (18th century), which rooms have a view over the gardens and the Loire. In the restaurant, overlooking the river or the gardens, the cuisine is light, delicate and with subtle local influences, and has won recommendations in the guides. How would you rate this great hotel?
